Reception

Learning through curiosity and play...

At Shrewsbury House, Reception is the first step in a learning journey that is engaging, supportive and carefully designed to inspire curiosity, confidence and independence. Our curriculum blends academic rigour with play, exploration and outdoor learning to give every child the best possible start to school life.

English & Maths

They enjoy daily English and Maths lessons, carefully structured to build core skills while keeping learning fun and relevant. From early reading and writing to developing number confidence, every child progresses at a pace that suits them. This is an added benefit to the small class sizes ensuring each child can thrive in a secure environment where teachers can get to know them personally.

French

Our boys also benefit from weekly French lessons designed to foster enjoyment and confidence in language learning. Through a range of engaging activities, including songs, games, and simple conversational basics they  build a positive foundation for future language learning.

Sports

Younger Years sport is all about enjoyment and action! The boys entwine physical activity with the current learning in the classroom. So whether it is a space themed game of Bulldog or catching and throwing to spell out their favourite animals, sport has the power to allow the boys to think about their development from another vantage point.

The boys will follow the themes covered in the upper years of the school approaching the topics of Acceleration, Balance and Co-Ordination, and Endurance but with themed weeks to further embed behavioural and classroom learning.

Reception also enjoy their weekly swimming sessions led by qualified instructors. These build water safety and physical independence from the very start of their school journey.

Music

In Reception, Music is lively, practical and rooted in singing. Pupils learn a wide range of songs, rhymes and chants, developing confident voices, secure pitch and a strong sense of pulse. Alongside singing, they use accessible classroom percussion to explore beat, keep a steady pulse, copy and create rhythm patterns, and develop ensemble skills.

Boys also explore dynamics and tempo, and learn to recognise musical contrasts such as loud/soft, fast/slow and high/low. Through listening games, movement and simple improvisation, children build early musicianship. Music in Reception nurtures creativity, collaboration and enjoyment, and supports the wider EYFS goals for expressive and imaginative learning.
